These notes focus on teaching skills and lesson planning with the aim of helping me in the class to get better at teaching the P7s and planning their lessons. Also to help with the P2s and assisting them in the classroom when I am asked to show certain groups how to do things and to how to deal with each child’s needs when it comes to learning.

- Developing and extending knowledge about decisions for certain situations is important
Observing experienced teachers can help give you ideas for your own way of teaching.
You can find out what works and what doesn’t work. You can question why that teacher did a lesson in certain way rather than a way you thought was better.
This page talks about how experienced teachers know what to do better because of the years of practice and trial and error they’ve had each year.
Defining essential teaching skills – discrete and coherent activities by teachers which foster pupil learning. Three important elements of skills:
Knowledge – teachers knowledge about subject, pupils, curriculum, teaching methods, influence on teaching and learning of other factors and knowledge of own teaching skills
Decision making – the thinking and decision making that happens during and after a lesson. How to achieve the best outcomes intended
Action – Obvious behaviour undertaken by teachers to cater to pupils learning

Major problem of trying to identify specific list of skills is that they vary from board to general skills.
Planning of lessons, right amount of time to take for pupils to answer questions
Useful to focus on fairly broad and general skills which are meaningful to teachers and relate to how theyre thinking about their teaching.
Hay McBer (2000) identified list of teaching skills
- high expectations
- methods and strategies
- pupil management/discipline
- time and resource management
teachers who are effective tend to have these skills
- establish an orderly and attractive learning environment
- concentrate on teaching and learning by maximising the learning time and maintaining the academic emphasis
- purposely teach through the use of well-organised and well-structured lessons coupled with clarity of purpose
- convey high expectations and provide intellectual challenge
- monitor progress and provide quick corrective feedback
- establish clear and fair discipline

- planning and preparation – skills involved in selecting the educational aims and learning outcomes for the lesson and how to best achieve these
- Lesson presentation – successfully engaging pupils
- Lesson management – managing and organising activities during lessons to keep the pupils attention and involvement
- Classroom Climate – maintaining positives attitudes and motivation
- Discipline – maintaining good order and dealing with misbehaviour
- Assessing Pupils Progress- covering formative (aid pupils further development) and summative (providing record of attainment) purposes of assessment
- Reflection and Evaluation – evaluating own current teaching practice to improve future teaching
